Ms. Robinson's Round Up

I want to take a moment to welcome you to the new 20-21 school year. Things are going to look different than before and I know you have probably heard this before in the recent past but we have to adjust to our current surroundings and environment. I will try to keep things centrally located here on the school website for parents and then in Google classroom for the students.
Most of my communication will be through ParentSquare. Please make sure that you have downloaded the app so that you can stay current on all messages from me so that you know what is going on in the classroom.
Below you will see links to Google Classrooms. Please use them as you see fit. Students can access their classrooms from here and show parents what assignments are upcoming and need to be submitted. I encourage parents to ask their students periodically throughout the year to have them show you what work they need to do and what work they finished. Google Classroom and PowerSchool are the best tools to be able to do that and stay on top of grades.
I look forward to meeting you all very soon. For now, enjoy this resource that has access to an online library.

Week Eighteen Updates!!

Good evening parents-

This is the last week before school is over for the semester. Here are this week's updates:
  • Students can still turn in UNIT 2 FINAL ESSAY, and only the Unit 2 Essay, this Wednesday. If students need to redo or submit one, they have a few days.
  • Students were assigned a Women's Research Project last Thursday. This needs to be done by Friday, December 18, NO EXCEPTIONS!! This will take the place of our final. The directions can be found on Google Classroom.

We have a few more days before a much needed break.

As always, if you have a question, please do not hesitate!

~Ms. Robinson

Week Seventeen Updates!!

Good evening-
As we near closer to the end of the semester, the week's updates will get shorter as there is less that we are doing. We are going to be doing a small project for the next two weeks focused on our next unit. Students need to complete it and turn in as it will be taking the place of our "final."

Students should still continue to get work in according to the document on how to submit late work. The last day for late assignments is this Friday the 11th.

Office hours are not canceled but if a student needs me they need to email and I will be available Tuesday and Wednesday after school. We can set up a zoom.

If you need anything, please do not hesitate to ask.
~Ms. Robinson

Week Sixteen Updates!!

Good evening!
I almost forgot to post this week's updates so I apologize for the late post. However, it will be quick so I won't take up too much of your time.

This week we will be writing our final essay for Unit 2. This is a big part of their grade, so please make sure that students take advantage of asynchronous days and office hours if they need help.

With that in mind, the only assignment for this week is the Unit 2 Final Essay which will be due on Saturday, December 5 by 11:59 pm.

I had to reschedule my watch party for today and it will take place tomorrow at 5 pm. We will be watching Remember the Titans for extra credit. The link is in google classroom.

Also, please have your students review what assignments can be redone to help their grade. Many students failed to turn in the Unit 1 essay and their grades were greatly impacted because of it. They should really focus on getting that one done first or redo it if they received a poor score and then move on to the other assignments that they can redo.

As always, please reach out if you have any questions.
~Ms. Robinson

Good evening-

This week's updates will be brief. We have a unique week ahead of us so this week will look different. While students are on their asynchronous days, please encourage your student to continue to work on assignments! We meet only ONE time this week and students are still going to need to submit assignments.

That being said, here are this week's task items:

Also, there will be no office hours this week but please email me if you have any questions.

~Ms. Robinson

Week Twelve Updates!!

This week's updates are going to be a bit lengthy, but worth the read.
First, this week we will be having our 8th grade parent meeting that each 8th grade advisory teacher has invited students from their own advisory. I would like to remind those parents, and any other parents who feel that they may want to attend, the meeting is tomorrow Monday at 5:30pm. The zoom link is here. In this meeting, you will not be able to ask specific questions regarding your student's grades, but you can request a parent/teacher conference during that meeting. We will be covering several ways that you can support your student in their academic success.

Also, I have offered an extra credit opportunity for students here. In short, students can watch up to two movies from the list and answer questions in order to replace two 'quiz' scores. Most movies are available on streaming platforms but I will be hosting watch parties for some of them starting in November. Students can log into zoom on a Sunday afternoon and watch the movie. They can then answer the questions on a google doc and share it with me.

There have been quite a few students who have been caught plagarising. Please understand that when a student does that, a grade of zero will be entered. Students are encouraged to do additional research to gain further understanding of the content, however they cannot use someone else's words as their own. Please speak with them about the importance of not plagarizing.

The SORA app has been fixed and is now working. All students have access to this wonderful online library and this will be helpful in completing the Reading Log assignment.

Students still need to take the STAR test through AR. I know some students have had some tech issues but continue to try until you can take it.

Here are this week's task items:
  • Common Lit: Emmett Till
  • Discussion Questions
  • Mini Essay #5
  • Reading Log
  • START test if you haven't already taken it
If you have any questions, please reach out!
~Ms. Robinson

Week Eleven Updates !!

I wanted to give you the updates and assignments for this upcoming week!

First a special shout-out to periods 2 and 7 for 100% attendance for Thursday and Friday. That is AWESOME!!! Next week I am hoping to see more periods hit that 100% as well!

Also, please check out the SORA reading app in your Google account. Reading Logs are still an assignment that needs to be completed and several students have asked where can they get books from. This is a new system so if you trouble accessing it, please let me know so that I can forward that info to the correct people.

In addition, students need to complete the STAR reading test through AR. The instructions for that are on Google classroom.

The weekly calendar is here.

This week's task items are:
  • Common Lit: Does It Matter if School Are Racially Integrated? Assessment and Guiding questions
  • Discussion Questions
  • Mini Essay #4
  • Reading Log
  • Star Reading test in AR

I am working on grades consistently, so please be patient with the updating of grades. Also, please make sure you have submitted through Google classroom. Due to the number of emails I receive, if a students 'shares' assignments to my email, they tend to get lost in the influx.

Office hours this week on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3-345. The zoom link is on the weekly agenda.

~Ms. Robinson

Week Ten Updates!!

Here are this week's updates. Since it is a short week, we have a short update :D
Students will need to complete the following task items:
  • Common Lit article: Plessy v. Ferguson
  • Discussion Questions
  • Mini Essay
  • Reading Log
Since I normally have office hours on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Tuesday there is no school, should a student require some help, please email so we can set up a time to meet ([email protected]). Wednesday's office hours will remain at 3-345. The zoom link is on the weekly agenda.

~Ms. Robinson

Week Nine Updates!!

Hello everyone!!

There aren't too many surprises or changes this week. However, I wanted to let parents know that I will not be facilitating class meetings Tuesday and Wednesday as I am doing a school visit over the next three days. Regular class meetings will continue with a sub, and students are still required to meet and join in the zooms. The material will still be covered and students are still held accountable for the work they are assigned for those days. I wanted to make you aware so that if you emailed me and I did not respond, you knew why. Because of this, there will be NO OFFICE HOURS this week. They will resume next week.

The biggest change is that I have made the due date for all of this week's assignments SATURDAY OCTOBER 10. Hopefully, this will help students in managing their time a bit more wisely.

This week's assignments are:
  • Common Lit article: Reconstruction - read and answer assessment questions
  • Discussion Questions
  • Mini Essay #2
  • Reading Log

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
~Ms. Robinson

Week Eight Updates!!

I have this week's updates for you and there are some changes, so please read through this message.

Students should have turned in their Unit One Final Essay this past Friday. We will be starting a new unit this week. Essays normally take a bit longer to grade than regular assignments so please allow some time for a turnaround. In addition, I will no longer accept late assignments that are over a week late from the due date. Many students have been turning in assignments that are, for example, 34 days late or more and I have been gracious in grading them and accepting them. However, this is the school policy and from this point moving forward I will adhere to it.

Many students have expressed that they have been feeling inundated with assignments and are having a hard time managing in this new realm of distance learning, so I have condensed the assignments for class. No more quickwrites. They will be replaced with Discussion Questions. One assignment (document) with 2 questions as opposed to two separate assignments. Taking the number of assignments down from five to four weekly. Also, I will be posting everything at the beginning of the week so that they will have all of the assignments at once. Previous, I thought that posting them through the week would help students manage work and spread it out, but I see that many students would prefer if they had everything upfront. Assignments will continue to be due at the end of the week on Friday by 11:59pm.

In addition, we are seeing so many students who refuse to participate. If a student does not participate, they will lack the understanding they need to complete assignments and tasks. Therefore I will be including a participation grade from this point forward. I need to hear from every student, every class meeting. There will be at least two opportunities for students to engage in the lesson. Therefore I will grade accordingly. If I hear from a student at least four times for the week, they get a four for participation, three times = a grade of three, so on and so forth. We really need students to be active participants in the class. (Absences will not be held against the grade.)

One last thing, with distance learning, the propensity of emailing has definitely increased from parent and student to teacher exponentially, which is to be expected. However, I must implement "quiet hours" to provide myself some balance and tend to my own family and their needs. I will not return emails received after five and will reply the following morning.

The tasks are as follows for the week:
  • Read poem America on
  • Discussion Question(s)
  • Mini Essay
  • Reading Log
Office hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:00-3:45 link is here.

If you need help with anything, please reach out.
~Ms. Robinson

Week Seven Updates!

Hello! I wanted to update you with the latest for our assignments. These are the week's task items:
  • This week there will be NO READING LOG. Since we are writing our end of the unit essay, I want students to focus on that.
  • I have extended the due date for the book test until Wednesday. I know some students are having a hard time finding their book and I have been helping students locate books on AR.
  • We are at the end of the unit, so we are going to be writing our FIVE PARAGRAPH ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY. Instructions are on Google classroom with resources included - template, outline, slides from class meetings, and rubric. The essay is due FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25.
  • Students will need to complete the Evidence Graphic Organizer as well where students need to find evidence for their essays from the readings over the last few weeks in CommonLit.
I will have office hours on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3-345. The link is on my weekly agenda. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

~Ms. Robinson

  • Reading Log
I will have office hours on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:00-3:45. Link is on the weekly agenda. Grades are updated from all assignments until 9/4. I will continue to update grades as assignments come in.

If you need anything, please do not hesitate to reach out.

I wanted to run down this week's updates. Understanding that tomorrow is a holiday and there is no school, I wanted to post this today so I don't forget tomorrow.

  • Reading Log for this week only needs FOUR entries but students are encouraged to complete five. Please read books that you have NOT read before. There are books in my online library that you may use.
  • I have attached the weekly agenda to help keep you on track.
  • Office hours: I will be hosting office hours from now on every Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:00-3:45. However, this week on Wednesday they will be canceled due to Back to School Night. Link for office hours here.
  • Parents, please have your student show you their grades on PowerSchool or download the app so you can monitor their grades. Check with teachers to see if you can still turn in late assignments.
  • Please have your cameras on when you enter into class.
